Transferring an Expired Domain

Expired domains can often still be transferred to a new registrar, but there are important restrictions and timelines to be aware of. The ability to transfer an expired domain depends on the specific Top-Level Domain (TLD) and its associated policies. If you have any questions about your specific TLD, please contact Support.

gTLD (Generic Top Level Domain)

  • Most gTLDs have a 40-day Grace Period after expiration. During this time, you can renew your domain without an extra fee and retrieve the authorization code needed for transfer.

  • If you wait until after the Grace Period, you’ll need to renew your domain and pay a Redemption Fee to get the authorization code for transfer.

  • Some gTLDs may have slightly different timelines or fees, so always check your specific domain’s policy

ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domain)

  • For most ccTLDs, you must renew your domain first before you can transfer the domain

  • Policies and fees can vary between different country code domains, so it’s important to review the rules for your specific ccTLD

  • Domains cannot be transferred within the first 60 days of registration or a previous transfer.

  • If your domain is in the redemption period (after the grace period), you must restore it (which usually involves a fee) before transferring.

  • Always ensure your domain’s privacy and transfer locks are disabled before starting a transfer.

To avoid future interruptions, consider enabling auto-renewal on your domains and keeping your contact information up to date.
