Status of Name Servers During a Domain Transfer

When you transfer your domain to 101domain, your domain will transfer in with it’s existing DNS. However, if your current registrar is also providing your DNS or web hosting, there are important steps you must take to avoid service interruptions

Note: Many registrars will remove your DNS zone records immediately upon transfer, potentially disrupting your website, email, and related services. Some may offer a brief grace period, but others may delete DNS records without notice.

What Happens to My Name Servers?

  • No automatic changes: Your domain’s name servers will stay the same during the transfer process.

  • Child name servers: If you have registered Child Name Servers (also known as glue records) through your previous registrar, you may need to re-register them in your 101domain account after the transfer.

What Should You Do Before Transferring Your Domain?

  1. Export and Save Your DNS Zone Records

  • Before you initiate a transfer, always export and save a copy of your current DNS zone records. This includes all A, CNAME, MX, TXT, and other records necessary for your website, email, and services to function.

  • Having a backup allows you to quickly restore your DNS settings if needed.

  1. Contact Your Current Registrar

  • Ask your registrar if your DNS zone will be deleted immediately after the transfer, or if there is a grace period.

  • Confirm whether you can continue to use their DNS hosting or web hosting once the domain is transferred. Some registrars require a separate paid DNS hosting plan to maintain service continuity after a transfer.

  • If you’re using a third-party DNS Hosting, there should not be any issues with your domain transferring over

  1. Consider Moving to Third-Party DNS Hosting

  • If your current registrar will delete the DNS zone after the transfer, consider switching your DNS to a third-party provider (such as Cloudflare, AWS Route 53, or 101domain’s DNS) before transferring your domain.

  • Update your name servers to the new DNS provider and ensure all records are set up and propagated before starting the transfer.

  1. Pre-Configure DNS Records with 101domain

  • If you need to pre-configure your DNS records to 101domain’s DNS Zone before starting the transfer, please open a Support Ticket with our Support Team for assistance.

Taking these steps will help you avoid unexpected downtime and ensure a smooth transfer

Note: Name server changes can only be made after the transfer is complete. If you need to update your name servers immediately, please do so with your current registrar before starting the transfer
