Why Documents Are Required to Register a Domain Name

Why Are Documents Required to Register a Domain Name?

Each domain extension (TLD) has its own set of rules and eligibility criteria. These may include requirements based on geographical location, industry, or business type. Some registries require specific documentation to verify the legitimacy of the registrant.

Geographical : A geographical domain is a domain name that's either a top-level domain (TLD) or a second-level domain which refers to a specific geographic location. These domains can represent a wide range of locations, from countries and cities to regions and cultural communities.

  • Irish companies: Must provide a Business Registration Certificate showing the Registration Business Number.

  • Foreign companies: Can register if they provide evidence of conducting business in Ireland or hold a trademark.

  • Irish individuals: Must provide an Irish identification document (such as a driving license or passport) and proof of address (such as a utility bill).

Industrial - An industrial domain refers to a domain name that is specifically designed for, or is relevant to, a particular industry or business sector.

Example: .AERO

  • Only available to companies and individuals in the aviation industry.

  • Requires a SITA ID and password for registration.

Business - A business domain is a crucial part of a company's online identity. It is the company's overall area of activity, which refers to the domain name a business uses for its website and email. It's the core service or product a company provides to its customers.

Example: .AZ
